PSYCHOTHERAPY
FACT: THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THERAPY IS LARGELY DETERMINED BY THE QUALITY OF THE CLIENT/THERAPIST RELATIONSHIP.
Although it is essential that a therapist has the appropriate credentials, when a client perceives the therapist as empathic -in other words, the client feels that the therapist is sincerely interested in understanding and supporting the client- therapy is more likely to be successful.
FACT: THERAPY IS SUCCESSFUL WHEN THE CLIENT REPORTS THAT LIFE IS MORE SATISFYING IN ANY NUMBER OF WAYS.
The therapist does not determine the success of the work. When the important question "How will you know when things are better for you?" is answered, then the therapist and client have the roadmap for their work together.
FACT: EACH OF US IS A COMPLEX OF INTERACTION BETWEEN MIND, BODY, EMOTION AND SPIRIT.
A rich and powerful therapeutic experience includes attention to each of these human elements. Curiosity will motivate the therapist and client to look more deeply, and to attend more closely the client's experience of life.
FACT: PATTERNS OF RESPONSE DEVELOP OVER A LIFETIME, BEGINNING IN CHILDHOOD.
Most often, people seek the help of a therapist because their relationships with self and others is unsatisfying, and at times, deeply hurtful. I feel it is essential to look to the past to understand these relational patterns, determine how they are impacting on the present, and identify ways to change these patterns so that the future is very, very different.
I call it "Connecting the dots." My clients and I are continually traveling to the past, the present, the future, and back again.
FACT: THERAPY IS SUCCESSFUL WHEN THE CLIENT IS EMPOWERED AS THE ULTIMATE AGENT OF CHANGE.
The hours spent in the therapy room, whether in person or at a distance, are powerful and important. The time spent there sets the stage for change to occur in the day to day life of the client; however, it is the client, making different decisions on a daily basis, who determines the success of therapy.
